defilementA 27-year-old barber was on Thursday remanded by an Accra Circuit Court for defiling a 10-year- old girl.

The accused, Aziabu John, was said to have defiled the girl at Mamobi, a suburb of Accra, on February 11, 2014.

He has since been remanded into police custody and to reappear before the court on April 22, 2014.

Chief Inspector Veronica Ofei told the court that the complainant is a petty trader and a grandmother to the victim and resides at Mamobi, while accused person also resides in the same vicinity.

She said the victim?s biological mother is a girlfriend to the accused person.

She said on February 10, 2014, in the night, the said mother took along the victim to the accused room and they spent the night together, with accused on the same bed sheet spread on the floor.

The prosecution said the following day, the victim and her mother went to the accused person and slept there again, but at dawn, her mother woke up to prepare kenkey leaving the victim.

She said the accused person took advantage of the absence of her girlfriend and forcibly had sexual intercourse with the victim, and after the act warned her never to inform anybody, or else he would kill her.

Chief Inspector Ofei said as a result of the threat the victim could not inform anyone, until the complainant took her to Akim Oda and while there she suspected changes in her.

She told the court that the complainant questioned the victim, and she revealed her ordeal, mentioning the accused person as the one who defiled her.

The prosecution said the complainant on her return to Accra, lodged a complaint at the Kotobabi Police Station where a medical form was issued to her to send the victim to the hospital for examination and treatment, after which she returned same duly endorsed by the medical officer.

She said the accused was arrested and the case transferred to Tesano DOVVSU for investigation. The accused in his caution statement denied the offence. GNA
