?Greece’s parliament on Friday elected an outspoken human rights lawyer as its speaker.
Zoe Konstantonopoulou, 38, a lawyer and a rising star of the leftist SYRIZA party, earned 238 votes in the 300-member parliament, which had convened for the first time since last month’s election.
Konstantonopoulou is the youngest person to be elected speaker.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is expected to present his government’s policy platform, which will be followed by a confidence vote on Tuesday.
SYRIZA has backed down from its pre-election demand for a debt writedown. It remains committed to its election promise of reversing austerity by increasing salaries and pensions, which goes against the conditions of its international bailout deal.
