An asteroid the size of a small house came within spitting distance (well, more like 59,000 miles) of Earth yesterday, but no one seemed to lose much sleep over it. Scientists with NASA?s Asteroid Watch program tweeted about the impending pass-by earlier in the week, alerting the public that ?Small asteroid 2012 TC4 will safely pass Earth Oct 12 at just .25 the distance to our moon?s orbit.?
Despite the mass?s seemingly large size, TC4 wasn?t actually big enough to cause any major issues even if it had hit us; astronomers have said that an asteroid would have to be about 460 feet wide to cause widespread damage to good ol? planet Earth. Phew. [Source]
