Access Bank Ghana Limited on Saturday won the much coveted Bank of the Year Award 2013, and also grabbed the Best Bank in Corporate Social Responsibility Award.

The Bank of the Year Award is given to the bank with the highest weighted score for the consumer survey, corporate social responsibility and financial performance.

Corporate Initiative Ghana, since 2001, has organised the Ghana Banking Awards with the aim of assessing the soundness, competition and quality of service of the universal banking sector of the financial system in Ghana.

The awards are based on publicly available financial statements published by the banks, a survey of the views and opinions of customers as users of the services of the bank.

Ernst and Young, the events statistician, brought their globally acclaimed reputation to bear positively on the integrity of the awards process.

There are 28 universal banks in Ghana; however, for the 13th Ghana Banking Awards on the theme ?Identifying and Rewarding Excellence in the Banking Services Proposition,? 26 banks which published their financial statements for the year ending December 31, 2013 were assessed.

Standard Chartered Bank took both the Trade Finance and the Bank Financial Performance Awards, whereas the Customer Care Award, Long Term Loan Finance Award, and the Household Finance Award went to Zenith Bank, ADB Bank and Fidelity Bank respectively.

The Enterprise Finance Award went to First Atlantic Bank, while Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award was won by Societe Generale.

GT Bank took the Product Innovation Award whiles the Competitive Pricing Award went to Bank of Baroda.

Royal Bank was adjudged the Growing Bank, whereas UT Bank took the Most Active E-zwich Bank Award. There was no winner for the Trade Deal of Year Award.

Dr Kofi Mbiah, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Shippers Authority, in his address, said the banking industry played a very critical role in the economy of every country.

He said trade volume was expected to reach $ 1.2 trillion of gross domestic product by 2020, he, therefore, urged the banking industry to develop the skills and capacity of its staff.

He said there was the need for the banking industry in Ghana to be very strategic in its efforts to win and maintain customers.

He commended the organisers and sponsors of the 2013 Ghana Banking Awards for ensuring that the project came to fruition.

Mr Simon Dornoo, President, Ghana Association of Bankers, said the awards were meant to recognise the contributions of the banking industry to Ghana?s socio-economic development.
