African CNN Multichoice Journalist Award heats up

Entry submissions for the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2013 Awards will be closing on April 17th, according to CNN International and MultiChoice.

The CNN African Journalist of the Year competition was established in August 1995 to encourage, promote and recognise excellence in African journalism. The first awards ceremony took place in Ghana on August 11, 1995. There were six winners that year from Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and Uganda.

?In 2012 Anny Osabutey of Joy FM in Ghana won the Radio Journalist category at the CNN Multichoice African Journalist 2012 Awards.

Over the past 18 years, the competition has grown in size and status to become Africa?s most prestigious media event. In 2012, a ?Highlights Programme? of the ceremony, held in Lusaka, Zambia, was broadcast in 47 African countries, on the Africa Channel in the US, UK and the Caribbean, and on RTP Africa.

Kenyans Tom Mboya and Evanson Nyaga were awarded the top prize at the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2012 Awards ceremony. Their work ?African Tribe in India?, which aired on Citizen TV, Kenya, was chosen from among 1,799 entries from 42 nations across the African continent.

This year, the competition will recognise excellence in the following categories: Culture Award; Digital Platform Award; The Coca-Cola Company Economics & Business Award; Environment Award; Free Press Africa Award; Mohamed Amin Photographic Award; MSD Health & Medical Award; Print General News Award; Radio General News Award; Sport Award; Television Features Award; Television News Bulletin Award; Francophone General News Awards; and Portuguese Language General News Awards.
