The Ahanta West Municipal Assembly has received GH¢1,986,666.22 under the 2026 Urban Development Grant to restart stalled infrastructure projects, including construction of 50 lockable stores at the Agona Nkwanta Market, after funding delays had stalled work and left contractors unable to sustain operations.
Municipal Chief Executive Ebenezer Kofi Aidoo told the Assembly at its latest sitting that officials had maintained sustained engagement with the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to secure release of the funds, which are being channeled through the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme. He said the Assembly has since settled outstanding contractual obligations, including final payments for the completed Domeabra and Damtse road projects, and cleared interim payments owed to contractors on the Apowa TUC Junction–Estate Road and market stores projects to allow work to resume. “Construction activities have now resumed in earnest,” Aidoo said, adding that the Assembly would closely monitor the projects to ensure timely completion.
The market investment forms part of a broader push to modernize trading infrastructure in Agona Nkwanta, the district’s capital and a town of roughly 25 kilometers from Takoradi’s central business district. Aidoo separately confirmed in February that the Assembly is also pursuing a larger 24-hour economy market for the town, a project he said would take 18 months to two years to complete once under way. He said the 50 lockable stores now being built would give traders more secure, organized space to operate and help stimulate broader economic activity in the municipality.
Beyond the market, Aidoo reported that construction of a cassava processing factory at Apimanim under the Local Climate Adaptive Living Facility project, funded by the Government of Norway, has reached roughly 70 percent completion, with remaining civil works expected to finish by the end of August. He said the facility would support value addition to cassava, cut post-harvest losses and create jobs once operational.
Aidoo, an engineer confirmed as MCE in April 2025, said the Assembly remains committed to completing its ongoing development projects to deliver tangible benefits to residents.
