? And 1st Fully Disability-Friendly Facility

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) will from the beginning of February 2014, begin the construction of the 90th of the one hundred (100) Millennium proposed schools.

The 90th Millennium School which will be fully disability friendly is to be situated in Gbegbeyise, one of the poorest and deprived communities near Mamponse in the Ablekuma West constituency of the Greater Accra Region.

This was made known by the Mayor of Accra, Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije when Accra Breweries Limited (ABL) presented a cheque sum of GH? 20,000.00 towards the construction on the rapid ?achievement record of AMA?s Millennium City Schools project, which was initiated from the vision of the mayor of Accra..

According to the Mayor, the AMA vision of building Millennium schools is not centered on constructing modern facilities alone, but also equips the facilities with state of the art materials with science and computer laboratories, conference rooms, generators and 24-seater toilets facility in each of the schools among others.

He indicated that the construction of the 90th Millennium School is through the support of the USAID, which donated towards the facility.

Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, who expressed passion and commitment towards ?transforming the educational sector through the provision of modern way of teaching and learning, averred that plans are underway to ensure that the beginning of ?2014/2015 academic year, AMA will introduce comprehensive technology approach in schools towards the delivery of quality and scientific methods of ?teaching and learning in all Schools under his jurisdiction.

?It is good to note that we want to see our system where our school children can have access to modern state of the art facilities like tablets, computers and so on to enhance their abilities in studies. Indeed, it is on record that about 85,000 pupils from our basic schools cannot move to the SHS level nationwide and in Accra alone, the number stands at 5,533. We need to change that Now,? he said.

The Mayor also mentioned that constructing Millennium Schools is government?s strategic plan for which giant and bold steps are being? taken to end the shift system completely nationwide.

He was happy to note that AMA was able to execute government?s agenda in ensuring that the shift system is abolished by providing over 600 temporal structures to house school children in Accra.

He also commended organizations who contributed towards achieving such significant feat in the lives of the children.

Doing the donation of the GH?20,000 cheque to the Mayor, the Corporate and Legal Affairs Director of ABL Adjoba Kiyiamah noted that the company is happy to be associated with the construction of the Millennium schools hence their gesture, promising better things from her outfit to support any worthy course the AMA will undertake.

She also commended AMA and the Mayor for the good works to ensure that Ghanaian children are giving the best education to build a better Ghana.

Meanwhile the Mayor of Accra has promised a total of about one hundred state of the art Millennium City School structures by the end of his four year tenure of office as sitting Mayor of Accra.
