Peter Essien in action for Bechem United
By Ameenu Shardow
Peter Essien has offered a groveling apology for blaming Bechem United’s management for not buying games to help keep the club afloat in the Premier League.
The Brong-Ahafo based club suffered relegation within just one year of gaining promotion to the Ghanaian top flight.
And the 23-year-old in an earlier interview said the club’s management was responsible for the predicament for failing to break football rules by fixing matches
The winger has however beaten a massive retreat by apologizing for the highly explosive comments made with a possible hearing at the ruthless Ethics Committee looming.
“I made an interview yesterday and upon sober reflection I realized I erred in my utterances,” he told Takoradi-based Skyy Power.
“I want to apologize to the leaders of the club, it was not my intention to embarrass them or bring the game into disrepute.
“Frustration over our relegation got the better of me and for that I would like to say sorry.
“I want to apologize to all Ghanaians and everyone who heard or read the news, it was a mistake I don’t intend repeating. I want everyone’s forgiveness.”
It remains to be seen whether Essien’s apology will be enough to exonerate the former Ghana youth international from any charges from the Ethics Committee which has gained the notoriety for clamping down on members of the association that make such irresponsible comments.
