“I am convinced that the education ministry is facing several challenges. I know that there are imperfections within this ministry notably with regards to the assessment and awarding degrees and diplomas to laureates at the end of a curriculum and teachers’ living conditions,” said Janviere Ndirahisha, Minister of Education, Higher Education and Scientific Research at the launch of the retreat meeting.

According to her, other challenges include the recruitment of the staff and big numbers of students entering the University of Burundi every year.

“The government allocates 28.3 percent of its annual budget to the education sector, but this remains little as the demand is always higher than the offer in terms of equipment, didactic materials services offered in the education sector,” said Ndirahisha.

She indicated that services offered in the education sector “must be improved”, adding that the improvement will be possible through behavioral change.

Ndirahisha said that the meeting is expected to issue a roadmap that addresses challenges in the education sector. Enditem
