Two people lost their lives, and six others were injured when portions of a new school building they were working on collapsed late Saturday, officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) told Xinhua on sunday.
Portions of the new one-story structure under construction for a pubic primary school in Dzorwulu, a suburb of Accra, collapsed Saturday, the Greater Accra Regional Director for NADMO Archibald Cobbinah told Xinhua.
One person died at the scene, and the other died on the way to a hospital, and the six injured persons are receiving treatment at the hospital, Cobbinah said.
Witnesses told Xinhua that bulldozers were busy pulling down the remaining structure while tipper trucks carted away the debris.
“We are yet to establish what may have caused the structure to collapse, however, looking at the weakness of the remaining structure, and cracks that have developed in it, we decided to pull down the structure,” Cobbinah said.
Some eye-witnesses told Xinhua they heard a loud noise from the area, and rushed to the place only to find that part of the new structure under construction had fallen on some of the workers. Enditem
