The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is strengthening its partnership with corporate organisations for the realisation of its digitisation agenda, Professor Mrs Rita Akosua Dickson, the Vice-Chancellor, has affirmed.
The objective is to liaise with the partners for the provision of the requisite Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure to underpin the University’s vision.
In line with the action plan, the authorities are restructuring the University Information Technology Services (UITS) to better support e-learning, research works and other administrative activities.
Prof. Mrs Dickson, addressing a presentation ceremony, in Kumasi, under the ‘Support One Needy Student with One Laptop (SONSOL)’ Project, said the digitisation drive of the University was expected to bring to standard the way things were done at the institution.
The programme saw some 793 brilliant-but-needy students of the University receiving laptops valued at GH¢3,965,000.00.
This brings to 1, 397 the total number of laptops distributed to the students since the beginning of the SONSOL Project in 2021.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, with the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to the 30 per cent online teaching policy, “it became evident that some brilliant but needy students were struggling to access teaching and learning and needed to be supported by all means.”
Therefore, the Project aims to come to the aid of needy students to cushion them for effective participation in academic work.
The beneficiaries of the SONSOL scheme are selected after going through a rigorous selection process to ensure only truly needy students benefit from this initiative.
Prof. Mrs Dickson lauded the donors of the computers for their kind support and urged the beneficiary students to make good use of the items.
