George Mireku Duker, the Deputy Minister of Land and Natural Resources responsible for mining, has asserted that Ghana’s achievements in the mining sector are unparalleled under the current government.
Highlighting various initiatives and interventions, Duker emphasized that these efforts have significantly transformed the country’s mining landscape.
In a recent statement, Duker noted that Ghana reclaimed its position as Africa’s leading gold producer in 2023, surpassing South Africa. According to statistics from the Ghana Chamber of Mines, the country’s gold output surged from 2.8 million ounces in 2021 to 3.7 million ounces in 2022. This represents a 32% increase attributed to growth in both large and small-scale mining sectors.
Previously, Ghana had temporarily lost its top position due to a decline in total production to 2.8 million ounces in 2020, trailing South Africa’s output.
Speaking on Accra-based Adom FM, Duker expressed confidence in the government’s policies and invited scrutiny of their impact on the mining industry. He welcomed debates on the matter, asserting that feedback from miners indicates widespread satisfaction with the government’s approach.
“Most miners are pleased with our policies and believe in our ability to foster growth in the sector,” Duker stated. “We are committed to implementing practical measures that ensure the mining industry thrives.”
Under the leadership of the NPP government, Duker affirmed a dedication to sustaining and furthering Ghana’s prominence in the global mining arena through strategic planning and effective governance.
