DR Congo forces launch operation against ADF rebels

The UN Mission for Stabilization of Congo (MONUSCO) and the DR Congo Armed Forces (FARDC) have launched a joint military operation against ADF NALU rebels in the east of the country, a security source said Thursday.


Military sources in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) said the objective of the operation is to destroy the positions of this Ugandan rebel group which has been carrying out attacks against civilians and army positions in the region.

rebel “It was at 4:30 a.m. this Thursday that FARDC special forces and those from MONUSCO launched attacks on the rebel group’s positions in several villages in Beni-Mbau sectors,” the military source said without giving precise details about the rebel group’s positions that had been attacked.

“The operation is still ongoing, but we do not want to say much because at the moment, our special forces are working with the Congolese army to defeat these Allied Democratic Forces rebels,” MONUSCO’s army spokesman Amouzoun Codjo told Xinhua.

Attacks by Uganda’s ADF rebels against several villages and Congolese army positions since Monday have left over 30 people dead, among them 20 rebels and 11 FARDC soldiers, as well as many others injured. Enditem
