Drama unfolded at?the Biriwa police?barrier in the Central?Region on Saturday?when a police officer?attached to the regional?police commander, one?Inspector Annane, brutally?assaulted a journalist?and described her as a??ghost? for trying to make?a police personnel aware?that he had flouted the?law.
The incident happened?at about 4:00 pm?when the journalist (name?withheld) was going to?cover a programme at?Winneba. On reaching?Yamoransah Junction, a?police officer who was in?a taxi from the Abura?Dunkwa direction,?instead of stopping for the?vehicles from the highway?to pass, hurriedly drove?onto the main road ? a situation?which nearly?caused an accident.
The police officer then?ordered his driver to?chase a Sprinter bus at the?barrier where he seized?the licence of the driver.
This paper can confirm?that for close to an?hour the driver was?pleading with the police?to give him his licence?since he could not drive?without it ? a situation?which compelled the journalist?to plead with the?officer to give the document?back to the driver?and process him before?court.
The intervention of the?journalist infuriated?Inspector Annane who?told his colleague not to?mind the journalist who?thought she knew the law.
Angry Inspector?Annane in his police uniform,?started raining?insults on the journalist,?moving from one point to?another, compelling passengers?on board the vehicle?to ask him to stop that?act since he is a public figure?and was disgracing?the noble police profession.
?Who do you think?you are? Foolish lady!?You look like a ghost,??Inspector Annane blurted?among many unprintable?words which should not?have come from the?mouth of a police officer?in uniform.
Although his colleagues?were there,?nobody was able to call?him to order since he?claimed he was the senior?officer among them and?that nobody had the right?to correct him. One of?them rather pleaded with?the journalist not to retaliate.
The journalist, who?looked very disappointed,?openly told the inspector?that she would go and?report him to the Regional?Police Commander,?DCOP Ransford Moses?Ninson.
The other police officers?later handed over the?driver?s licence to him?and the journey continued?but the journalist got to?the programme late.
