The Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has assured that the recent theft of five laptops from the EC office will not impact the upcoming December polls.
Mensa addressed concerns raised after the theft, which prompted calls from the National Democratic Congress for an independent investigation and audit.
However, during her briefing to Parliament on election preparations, Mensa clarified that the stolen laptops did not contain sensitive information unrelated to the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits.
She emphasized that the security protocols prevent the stolen laptops from compromising the integrity of the electoral process. “Even if you assume that a BVR or a BVD was stolen, they have to be activated and undergo security processes to be connected to our system,” Mensa explained.
She further assured the public of the EC’s commitment to enhancing security measures to prevent such incidents in the future. “We’ve taken steps to beef up our security in those places to ensure that such steps will not happen again,” Mensa assured.
The EC’s proactive measures and Mensa’s reassurances underscore the commission’s readiness to maintain the security and integrity of the upcoming elections despite the setback caused by the theft of the laptops.
