Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger has jumped to the defence of his Ghanaian midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong who stirred a race controversy on Twitter. The 21-year-old was responding to questions over why he was not picked for Tuesday?s Capital One ? a competition usually used by the big English teams to give fringe players a run out ? game against Chelsea.
Frimpong is alleged to have responded to one of the questions by posting on his Twitter page: ?LOL I wanna laugh. Sometimes I wish I was white and English #realtalk.?
The press have however since run riot with the Ghana international?s comments on his social media platform ? insisting he was making allegations towards the Arsenal boss over his selection policy based on race and nationality.
Frimpong has since come clear on his comments ? remaining adamant it was a joke ? an explanation full accepted by his manager.
?He said it was a joke. I don?t know [that] has he a problem with England, with anybody else, with Arsenal,? Wenger told the club?s website.
?In fact he was on the list to be the 19th player, he was called up this morning but he was sick. So for us, he was selected.?
It is not the first time that the young Gunner has courted controversy on Twitter, having previously faced FA sanction over a racist term used in response to a Tottenham fan on the site.
There is a growing feeling that the midfielder, who is remarkably a regular feature in Ghana squads despite rarely featuring at club level, is too preoccupied off the pitch to succeed at Arsenal.
