Security beefed up to prevent inmates’ escape

Erosion is threatening the walls of the Uyo Prisons located on the Wellington Bassey Way, Charles Isong, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Akwa Ibom Command of Nigeria Prisons, said at the erosion site on Monday.
The PRO said that security had been beefed up around the premises of the prison to forestall any breach.
“Considering the security implications and the fact that the erosion is so close to the walls of Uyo Prisons, we do not want a situation where Akwa Ibom people will wake up to hear that Uyo Prisons has been washed away by erosion.”
While commending Governor Godswill Akpabio for his assistance to the Nigeria Prisons, Isong appealed to the governor to use his good office to intervene in the matter.
He said that the command had reported the situation to the state’s ministries of environment and works, adding that officials from the ministries were yet to visit the site.
Isong warned that if nothing was done urgently, the walls of the prisons could be washed away by erosion, leading to the escape of inmates.
“If that happens, I don’t think Uyo residents will be able to sleep, as there will be no peace in the town. It is indeed an emergency situation that must be tackled immediately,” he said.
He said that other security agencies had been informed of the development, adding that they had deployed their officers around the premises.
