Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras says Europe is at a “crucial moment,” and must find solutions to his country’s economic woes that respect both the will of the people and EU rules.
Any decision on Greece’s bailout must be based on “the respect of fundamental European values with regard to democracy … but also with regard to the need to respect the European rules and norms,” Tsipras says in Brussels, hours before a summit of EU leaders.
“We remain within the framework of … very tough austerity,” he says, adding that while the country has seen a reduction in its deficits, it has also experienced “a growth in inequality.”
The time has also come for Greece to undertake reforms that were not tackled in the past, Tsipras says, referring to tax evasion, the fight against corruption and other structural reforms.
