Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Quevin Castro has died at 25 after collapsing during a pre-season friendly for Portuguese third-tier side Real Sport Clube on Saturday.

Castro fell to the ground in the first half of Real Sport Clube’s friendly against top-flight Estrela da Amadora at the Estadio das Seixas in Malveira, near Lisbon. Medical staff attended immediately, including using a defibrillator, before he was taken to hospital, where he died. The Lisbon Football Association said Castro “passed away this morning during the pre-season friendly.”

Real Sport Clube called him “an integral part of our family, leaving an indelible mark on all those who knew him.” Estrela da Amadora also offered condolences to his family, friends and club.

Castro came through Sporting CP’s youth academy in Lisbon before moving to England at 16. He joined West Brom in 2021, making his debut against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup that year and his only league appearance in a 2-0 home defeat by Swansea City the following February. He spent a season on loan at Burton Albion and later played for Cambridge City, York City and Notts County before returning to Portugal last summer.

West Brom said they were “devastated” by his death and will mark it with a period of applause in the 25th minute of Sunday’s Championship fixture against Burnley, with players wearing black armbands.
