Begins sensitisation campaign on the new penalties

The Bayelsa State command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), on Sunday, announced that motorists who flout road traffic regulations in the state will be made to pay a fine of N10,000.00 or serve a six-month jail term.
The state sector commander, Jack Vincent, said the order was made because of the increasing rate of motorists? recklessness recorded on the road daily.
Vincent revealed that the order would be strictly enforced, especially as the year was coming to an end. He added that the issue would be part of the one-week ?Ember Months? road traffic sensitisation campaign.
?We have discovered that the major problem with our people is attitude and we have decided to make ?change of attitude? the focus of our campaign this period,? he said.
?We want to try and see if we can change the behaviour of commercial vehicle operators in the state and see if the rate of road traffic crashes will reduce.”
He said all forms of arrest would be suspended during the week-long sensitisation campaign.
?We are not enforcing anything; we are only going to campaign throughout this week,” he said.
The FRSC commander warned drivers against over-loading, which he said had become a common practice on the roads.
He also lauded the recent ban on commercial motorcycles in Yenagoa, saying traffic in the city had improved.
