GCNet in collaboration with GRA (Customs Division) has organised a sensitisation programme for transitors and stakeholders at the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) Conference room on the deployment of its enhanced i-Transit Tracking System for both inbound and outbound transit cargos to and from the neighboring countries.

The enhanced i-Transit system which is already operational in Tema, Takoradi, Elubo, Paga and Kulungugu is now deployed in Aflao.  Some benefits include systems alerts, geo-fencing — which is an in-built route approved by Customs — and trip history.

Other benefits include the availability of enough devices to address the shortage of Customs Officers to escort transit cargos.

Participants were taken through procedures and features of the new system pending in-depth formal training of each Stakeholder segment.

As part of the deployment, GCNet is refurbishing the Transit Terminal at the Aflao border-post to enable stakeholders operate in a congenial environment that also facilitates the work of Customs officers as they process transit consignments.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Seth Dovlo, outgoing Assistant Commissioner of Customs, Aflao, commended GCNet and mentioned that the new system will not only save cost from CFA80,000 to US$50 (from GH¢296 to GH¢97.5) but will also save lives, as hitherto Customs officers had to physically escort transit cargos to their destinations.

He also said the i-Transit system is one of the best legacies he is leaving for Aflao as he proceeds on retirement.

Also at the meeting was Mr. Evans Klutse, former Assistant Commissioner of Customs, Aflao, and currently a consultant for USAID. He welcomed the initiative and urged members to comply with procedures and best practice to enhance and facilitate Transit Trade.

Mr. Emmanuel Tetteh, Head of GRA Customs Division Transit Monitoring Team, demonstrating how to mount the enhanced i-Transit device on a cargo. Assisting him is Mr. Jeremiah Kwao of the Transit department, GCNet
