Under the leadership of the Ministry of Health, Ghana has intensified its emergency response and surveillance measures in the wake of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recent classification of Mpox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

This escalation in response comes after the WHO noted a significant rise in Mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and other African countries.

On August 14, 2024, the organisation’s Director-General announced that the surge in cases across Africa necessitates heightened global alert under the International Health Regulations (2005).

In light of this declaration, the Ministry of Health has mandated all health agencies and relevant stakeholders to enhance monitoring at Points of Entry, including airports and border crossings.

The Ghana Health Service has also released detailed guidelines to aid in the identification, early detection, reporting, and treatment of Mpox.

While Ghana has not reported any new Mpox cases this year, the country experienced 120 cases in 2022 and 8 cases in 2023.

Despite the current absence of reported cases, the Ministry of Health emphasises the importance of proactive measures to prevent potential disease resurgence.

The Ministry urges the public to promptly utilise healthcare facilities for any symptoms or concerns related to Mpox. It underscores that early detection, timely reporting, and immediate treatment are crucial in containing the disease and halting its spread.

The Ministry remains committed to ensuring comprehensive health coverage and calls on all citizens to actively cooperate with health authorities and follow the provided guidelines to protect public health. Your cooperation is crucial in this collective effort.
