The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has re-affirmed its commitment to producing high-caliber human resource for national development.

Authorities have therefore set up decentralized quality assurance sub-units to deal with related internal issues for effective management.

Head of Quality Assurance, Prof Samuel Nii Odai, says the approach is expected to facilitate speedy identification of quality assurance issues at various departments for action.

The Quality Assurance and Planning Unit of the KNUST, among other responsibilities, is charged with fashioning out policies for the effective running of the school.

It also monitors and evaluates the various stakeholders, including students and lecturers, as well as introduction and review of courses.

The centralization of the unit at the Vice-Chancellors Office over the years has made monitoring less effective.

Colleges, Libraries, Transport, security among many other sectors are yet to realize the impact of quality assurance on the service they deliver.

Prof Nii Odai says it has therefore become necessary to set up quality assurance sub-units to get them involved so that they can identify, fashion out solutions and resolve issues of quality assurance in their units.

He noted with the universities population now close to forty thousand the quality assurance unit cannot remain in the office of the vice chancellor and still be effective in carrying out is duties.

At the inauguration of nine quality assurance sub-units of up to seven members, Prof Odai said the system has the potential to improve academic standards at the university.
