Former Information and Communication Technology Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth, on Thursday was jailed for one year, just two days after being charged with corruption and his subsequent resignation.
However the Intermediate Court put the sentence on hold until July 16. A social report will be made on the minister and if it is positive, he could get a community service order instead of the custodial sentence.
Nevertheless, Jugnauth has said he will appeal against his conviction and sentence.
Jugnauth was accused of approving fund for the taking of a private clinic, whose major shareholders are his relatives, by the state, while he argued that he had disclosed the relationship when the issue was discussed in cabinet.
The former minister is a close ally of Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth. Enditem
