Kofi Adams, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency, has sharply criticized Ghana’s current leadership for failing to address the ongoing galamsey crisis.

Adams argued that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia should be held accountable for the country’s persistent illegal mining problems.

“Everything rises and falls with leadership,” Adams asserted during an appearance on Key Points on Saturday, September 7. “When we say politicians have failed, we comfort those in leadership responsible for addressing our problems.”

In a related discussion, private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu challenged President Akufo-Addo’s previous claims about his commitment to combating illegal mining. Kpebu criticized the President’s statement from a workshop on July 11, 2017, in which Akufo-Addo vowed to stake his presidency on the fight against galamsey.

Kpebu contended that President Akufo-Addo’s pledge was nothing more than political rhetoric. “Akufo-Addo never meant his ‘I will put my presidency on the line’ comment. He was merely sloganeering,” Kpebu remarked.

The ongoing debate highlights the growing frustration among Ghanaians regarding the government’s handling of illegal mining activities, which have caused significant environmental and economic damage.
