Normalcy in Kinshasa despite opposition strike call

Activities began as usual on Tuesday morning in different parts of Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), despite a call by the opposition for a "ghost town" strike.

Several opposition parties have backed Tuesday’s strike whose main objective is to say no to a third term bid by President Joseph Kabila, and call for organization of elections within the constitutional time-lines.

The opposition members have accused Kabila of planing to extend his stay in power beyond November this year when his second term ends.

From 5 a.m. (local time), vehicles and motorcycles were moving as normal, with pedestrians equally seen walking to their various work places.

In the city center, movement was normal without any major visible disruption. Vehicles were seen transporting workers to the biggest markets in the town.

Students in uniform could also be seen along the roads heading to their schools within the city. Only French, Belgian and American schools remained closed, a diplomatic source told Xinhua.

In a circular issued by the public service ministry, the government had warned of punishment for all those who will be absent from their places of work on Tuesday. Enditem
