Cape Coast, April 7, GNA- Churches in the Cape Coast Metropolis on Friday held church services to mark the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, an event that happened more than 2000 years ago.

Others held conventions and crusades to make the day as pews in the churches were filled to capacity leading to the provision of extra seats under tents and in open spaces for those who could not get access to the church halls.

Most of the people were resplendent in either in black or red attire to express grief at the death of Jesus, which is viewed in Christian theology as a necessary sacrifice to be made for the salvation of mankind.

At the Elmina Circuit of the Methodist Church, Very Reverend Dr. Symonds Botchwey, in a sermon, cautioned the congregation not to sin deliberately knowing Jesus suffered and died for their sins, stressing that those who deliberately sinned would be consumed by the anger of God.

He said because of man, Christ was crushed, yet his crucifixion and death brought man salvation, peace, reconciliation, and hope and for that reason, Christians should rather let the death of Christ bring them nearer to God and not otherwise.

Rev.  Dr. Botchwey urged Christians to reciprocate the love Christ showed to mankind by accepting him as their lord and saviour and endeavor to obey all the rules and regulations governing his word.

At the Christ Apostolic Church International, Apostle Dr. Michael Nomo, Central Regional Territorial Apostle, who spoke on the “power of the resurrection”, stressed that the death and resurrection of Jesus has brought hope and new goals to all Christians.

He, in this regard, urged all Christians to eschew all social vices in their lives and allow the power of the resurrection to change them in order to build a solid church and a better country.

Apostle Nimo stressed the need for Christians to live in peace and unity with each other, adding that the peace Ghanaians needed would  depend on the efforts all and urged  Christians to  endeavor to lead lives worthy of emulation.

At the Amanful St Joseph Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Samuel Asante, the Parish Priest, said the death of Jesus was a divine gift to Christians, that they may have life abundantly.

He said as Christians, they would carry a lot of crosses in their lives which may come in various sizes, shapes, colours and of different material but that as  Christ accepted the cross ,so should Christians, and noted  that with the help of Christ they would be able  to carry their crosses to the end.

Fr. Asante urged Christians to truly reflect on the passion and death of Christ and endeavor to lead lives that was worthy of their calling, stressing that Easter should not be a period of only merry making but a period for all to seriously reflect on their lifestyles and make amends where necessary.
