Naana Adiki Manyeyo Adi I, Queenmother, Adibiawer Clan of Ada, has deduced that parental negligence has served as the fundamental causes of teenage pregnancy and therefore admonished parent to save the girl-child through conscious acts.
She urged parents to take the girl-child’s education seriously; “as education could redeem the girl-child from abuse and ignorance act of involvement in early and unprotected sex”.
Naana Adi in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Sege on the side-line of the 30th Anniversary celebration of the Ada Senior High Technical School (ASTECH), expressed concern about some parents who ask their teenage girls for financial assistance, which was weird; “where do you expect your girl-child to get money from other than from men?
“What do you expect the girl-child to do to get money from men? You are covertly or overtly pushing that ignorant girl-child into the wilderness to be devour by scrupulous men and boys”.
Naana Adi noted that “it is even worse that some parents don’t have any idea of when and where their children sleep, but only look for them when they needed them to run errands.
“We as parents are mandated to provide the basic necessities of life to these children, we voluntary brought into this world.
“Can you imagine that a teenager comes home with a mobile phone or other items, which were not bought by the parent but no one questions him or her?”
The queenmother who is also the Executive Director of AACommAid Foundation, an NGO which advocates for eradication of teenage pregnancy, entreated parents to co-operate with teachers and government to curb the teenage pregnancy menace.
She said, “parents should take advantage of government’s Free SHS policy to champion girl-child education to prevent the canker because, women when given the chance, perform more than expected.
“Students who have already given birth and have the motivation of going back to school should not get discouraged since education has no age barrier,” she added.
