Rwanda’s ruling coalition, led by President Kagame’s Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), has emerged victorious in the legislative election, securing the highest number of seats with over 62% of the votes.

The RPF’s dominance is bolstered by support from allied parties, including those whose leaders actively campaigned alongside President Kagame during the recent presidential election.

Historic parties such as the Liberal Party and the Social Democratic Party garnered nearly 11% and 9% of the votes, respectively, solidifying their positions in the political landscape.

Minor opposition groups, including PS Imberakuri and the Democratic Green Party, also crossed the minimum threshold to secure parliamentary representation, collectively capturing over 5% of the votes.

The electoral composition following these proportional representation elections is expected to show minimal change compared to the previous assembly elected in 2018.

As of provisional results, President Paul Kagame has achieved an overwhelming 99% of the vote in the presidential election, maintaining his decades-long tenure in power. His opponents, Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana garnered less than 1% of the vote combined, according to results accounting for 79% of all ballots cast.

The electoral commission is yet to release a detailed distribution of parliamentary seats among the political parties, reflecting the culmination of Rwanda’s tightly controlled electoral process.
