The deceased
Residents of Ho in the Volta Region yesterday witnessed a bloody accident when a Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus popularly called Kufuor Bus crushed a young man to death.
The deceased, who was identified as Devine Mensah, a worker at the Ho timber market, was riding a scooter with a pillion rider, Saviour Kpodo, who was his bosom friend.
They were from Tanyigbe which is close to Ho.
The two friends, both in their early 20s, were hit by the bus around 1:40pm in the afternoon at Batanis Junction, a few meters away from the Volta regional office of DAILY GUIDE.
Eyewitnesses said the motorbike was coming from the Ray Makaso-OLA SHS main gate road while the MMT bus was from the opposite direction.
A pork seller, Bright Dzimese, an eyewitness, described the incident as ?horrifying and very pathetic?.
He said he saw the MMT Bus approaching from the market direction and just when he was about to reach his spot, the bus made an overtaking and entered into the opposite lane. At the same time, Devine, the motorbike rider, popularly known as ?Lazy?, was also coming from the opposite direction. At the Batanis Junction (DAILY GUIDE Junction) there was a car parked ahead of the scooter.
He also overtook it and returned to its lane. However, the MMT bus, in the process of returning to its lane, hit Devine and Saviour.
Although the two were not wearing helmets, Saviour survived, as the impact tossed him off the road, falling behind the Pork Seller?s table. Devine on the other hand seemed to have a date with his Maker and so was stuck in the mangled scooter motionless with a broken skull and a protruding leg bone.
The two were rushed to the Volta Regional Hospital, but Devine was confirmed dead on arrival while Saviour was in a critical condition in the emergency ward, with doctors battling to save his life.
The scooter, which was damaged beyond repairs, had been conveyed together with the MMT Bus to the Volta Regional Police Headquarters, Ho, by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) as investigation continued into the incident.
