Senegalese youths compete in language speaking contest

China Radio International (CRI), China's state-owned radio service, has organized an oral expression contest in both Chinese and French languages to mark its first anniversary since launching broadcasts in Senegal.

The event was held Wednesday in Dakar under the theme, “China and Me.”

“Youths are a very important part of our listeners. We are interested in all Senegalese nationals who want to know something about China. This helps us to know what people think of China. By extension, this helps us to know which programs we should broadcast to our audience,” Programs Director for CRI in Dakar Tai Xueqing said.

“The theme, China and Me, is an expression that gives one a broader space to express themselves, give their point of view and say all they know about China,” she added.

The competition was an opportunity for Senegalese youths to say why they are interested in China and what really fascinates them about the country and its culture.

“I was very satisfied by these candidates who presented their speeches in Chinese. They impressed me with their level of the language,” Tai said, adding that “maybe next year we shall have more interesting ideas.”

China’s ambassador to Senegal Zhang Xun said the importance of the contest was that it offered a platform for direct exchange and communication between the two peoples and civilizations.

Fourteen Senegalese candidates, most of them students at the Confucius Institute in Dakar, participated in the competition. Enditem
