Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu will soon be able to return home as his health is continuing to improve, his foundation said on Thursday.

“He was exercising daily, and spending more and more time sitting in a chair, rather than lying in bed,” the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation said.

The Nobel Peace Laureate has been in and out of hospital for the past six weeks to receive intensive antibiotic treatment for a stubborn infection and related complications.

On Thursday, former South African President FW De Klerk visited Tutu in a Cape Town hospital.
De Klerk, the last apartheid president, shared the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize with Nelson Mandela who later became the first black president in 1994.

De Klerk said he looked forward to watching the soon-to-be 84-year-old Archbishop on the dance floor when he celebrates his 80th birthday party early next year.

The Archbishop responded that if he didn’t feel up to dancing, he would certainly pray for the former president.
Earlier, Tutu’s daughter, the Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu, said both doctors and the family were very pleased with his progress.

Tutu was re-admitted to hospital on August 17 due to inflammation two weeks after he was discharged.

Tutu is being treated for inflammation, unlike last time when he was hospitalised for an persistent infection which was a consequence of past treatment that he had received for prostate cancer.

The prostate cancer, itself, was under control, according to Canon Tutu.

Tutu was first hospitalised in mid-July and stayed for one week. Several days later, he was hospitalised again. The last time he was discharged from hospital was on August 4. Enditem
