The Ministry of Health has set up a committee to investigate the procurement process of a large consignment of a brand of condoms known as ?Be Safe? leading to the award of the contract to procure the condoms considered to be of poor quality and substandard.
According to the Ministry, it has all the information on the issue regarding the importation of the said product from China and is being distributed for users in the country.
In a press release, the Ministry regards the report as a matter of grave concern and said it is doing everything possible to minimize the effect of the condom on users by taking some measures to mitigate the effect.
The Ministry also said it has identified the number of condoms that have been distributed to the general public as well as the affected areas of supply and they are being recalled from the system.
?The Ghana Health Service in conjunction with the Food and Drugs Authority is working to retrieve these condoms. The affected areas of condom supply have also been cordoned off,? it said.
A vigorous public awareness campaign has been mounted by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) on the circulated sub-standard condoms and the need for the public to be wary of their patronage.
The issues of the sub-standard condoms have also been brought to the notice of the manufacturers and they are cooperating with the ministry to contain the situation.
?The ministry wishes to assure the general public that it is in control of the situation and that there is no cause for alarm as the ministry will ensure public safety with regard to the condom issue.?
