The UN Security Council condemned the escalating attacks by the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram in Nigeria and neighbouring countries and warned Monday of the worsening humanitarian crisis sparked by the group’s violence.UNSC

While the council has previously condemned certain attacks by the terrorist group, the statement adopted Monday was the first official reaction from the world body to the terrorist group’s activities as a whole, noting that some of their actions might amount to crimes against humanity.

“The Security Council demands that Boko Haram immediately and unequivocally cease all hostilities and all abuses of human rights and violations of international humanitarian law and disarm and demobilise,” the statement said.

The document was issued on the eve of a regional meeting Tuesday in Niger to discuss the threat posed by Boko Haram.
