Voters’ cards were burned in Mwaro province, central Burundi by people opposing upcoming elections, while another group broke into a primary school within Gisozi commune in Bujumbura and destroyed over 1,100 voters’ cards and voters’ registers, Burundi national radio reported Wednesday. Burundi
President of the Independent Provincial Electoral Commission David Ntigahera said all these acts will not negatively impact the electoral process in the two communes. He urged the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) to replace the voter’s cards and registers as soon as possible.
Following the incidents, distribution of voter’s cards has been suspended in the two communes.
Recently, protesters against a third term bid by President Pierre Nkurunziza burnt down electoral materials in Mukike and Mugongomanga communes in Bujumbura.
On May 25, protesters in the southern province of Bururi attempted to break into the center holding electoral materials but were prevented by security officers, who killed one of the protesters.
On Tuesday, Burundi’s Interior Minister Edouard Nduwimana met with security officers and territorial administrators and announced a special plan to secure the electoral process.
Burundi is scheduled to hold legislative and municipal elections on June 5 and later hold presidential elections on June 26, 2015.
The presidential elections are contested as opposition parties and civil society organizations have maintained that Nkurunziza’s third term bid was unconstitutional and a violation of the Arusha Agreement that limits presidential terms to two.
On the other hand, the president’s supporters insist that he can contest for a third term because he has only been elected once through universal suffrage. He was first elected in 2005 by Burundi parliament. Enditem
