Will Smith and Denzel Washington
as Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby? Perhaps! According to Deadline.com’s Mike Fleming, Washington and Smith could team up for a remake of “Uptown Saturday Night,” from director Adam McKay. The original “Uptown Saturday Night” was released in 1974, the first of an unofficial trilogy Poitier and Cosby made together. (It was followed by “Let’s Do It Again” and “A Piece of the Action.”)
There are plenty of caveats, of course, for this new version. For starters, Smith and Washington are merely being sought to star. If this sounds familiar, that’s because you remember when Variety reported on the “Uptown Saturday Night” remake last March. Smith and Washington were on the Warner Bros. wish list back then as well.
There’s also the fact that McKay is going to be busy with the sequel to “Anchorman” next year, meaning “Uptown Saturday Night” might not even happen before 2014. David Dobkin (“Wedding Crashers”) was initially attached to direct.
