The Tema Excellence Awards which was instituted seven years ago in Tema is aimed at awarding and rewarding distinguished personalities who have excelled in various fields of endeavors within Tema Region.
Speaking at the launch, The Chief Executive Officer of the Tema Excellence Awards Foundation, Hon Kwasi Poku Bosompem, said, this year’s Awards ceremony is under the theme “Tema before, Today and Tomorrow”
According to him, Tema over the years has deteriorated as a result of politicization of everything.
“Tema is being deteriorated because if you try to challenge someone for doing the wrong thing, a political head is called to save the situation” Hon Bosompem noted
This he said is not helping Tema, as lawlessness has taken the center stage of everything.
He bemoaned the littering of containers everywhere in the metropolis which does not speak well of an industrial city like Tema.
“if you go around Tema, you see container everywhere and it doesn’t speak well. I think the time has come for us to say enough is enough to containerization in Tema”
He said the time has come for all to join hands in maintaining and raising the standards Kwame Nkrumah had in mind whilst building Tema.
Hon Bosompem added that, the Tema Excellence Awards Foundation as part of its social responsibilities is supporting over 400 widows and assisting some brilliant but needy students through school.
A former Presiding Member of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly and a member of the Tema Excellence Foundation board, Dr Deborah Kubadzi said she is hopeful that Tema under the administration of the current MCE will once again take back its lost glory.
According to her Tema over the years has gone bad due to bad leadership and its maintenance culture unlike in the 60’s and the 70’s where things were very orderly.
“Tema in the 60’s and 70’s was a very orderly and beautiful place to be, but the situation is not what we see today”
She said the planned beauty of Tema has been deformed with the influx of people trooping into the Metropolis over the years, adding that there is the need for all including the political heads to join hands in maintaining the beauty and orderliness that had existed in Tema in times past.
