Governor says high number is due to public enlightenment

About 7.6 million children were immunised in the second phase of the polio immunisation programme in Kano, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, the state’s acting governor, has said.

Speaking on Thursday, Ganduje said the high number of immunised children was due to the state’s investment in public enlightenment campaigns.

“We are monitoring the local governments at the borders, especially areas that have recorded polio cases in other states because they attend some common functions in our local governments, like Islamic religious ceremonies and markets,” he said.

“The exercise has recorded tremendous success, as we were able to reach communities and children who were not immunised during the previous exercise. We also mobilised the traditional institution in addition to using advocacy and dialogue during the exercise.”

Nigeria is one of three countries in the world where the polio virus is still endemic, despite the billions of Naira spent on eradicating the disease.
