More than 17,000 abroad Myanmar cast their votes

A total of 17,498 overseas voters have cast their advance votes at Myanmar embassies and consulates abroad for the country's Nov. 8 election, an official report said Tuesday.

The advance voting for overseas Myanmar nationals began on Oct. 13 and will end on Oct. 23.

Myanmar opened 18 overseas polling stations at its foreign offices abroad.

The Union Election Commission has urged overseas voters, who fail to cast ballots during the slated period, to obtain recommendation from Myanmar embassies and consulates to vote on the election day if they return to Myanmar.
Election campaign by political parties and independents have been in full swing since it started on Sept. 8 and will end on Nov. 6, two days before the election.

There are 35 million eligible voters in the country, according to chairman of the election commission U Tin Aye.
A total of 40,516 polling booths will be set up across the country, most of which lie in Yangon, Mandalay, Ayeyawaddy, Bago and Magway regions.

Some 6,074 candidates from 91 parties, including 310 independents, are running for the upcoming election.
The commission designated 1,163 constituencies for the vote at four levels of the parliament across the country.

The Nov. 8 election is to choose representatives to the new parliament, which will be inaugurated in January 2016. The presidential vote will take place in the parliament by February and the new government will take office in March. Enditem
