SIX PERSONS who were grabbed by the police in connection with the demonstration at Kenyasi near Kumasi on Monday have been granted bail.
Sergeant Godwin Ahianyo, Deputy PRO, Ashanti Regional Police Command, said the six persons were nabbed on Monday by the police.
He did not disclose the identities of the apprehended people, but said that ?the police grabbed six people and they were granted bail the same day.?
Sgt. Ahianyo said on radio that the six persons were nabbed by the police because they were rioting instead of demonstrating.
According to him, the leadership of the demonstrators was granted permission by the police to hit the streets to protest against bad roads in the area.
The police PRO noted that initially the demonstration went on smoothly without any incident, under the watch of some police personnel.
Sgt. Ahianyo said, however, that at a point during the demonstration some of the people started burning tyres and blocking the street.
He said at that moment the hitherto peaceful demonstration on the streets of Kenyasi suddenly turned into a riot.
The police PRO noted that considering the level of lawlessness on the part of the demonstrators, the police were compelled to apply force.
Sgt. Ahianyo flatly rebutted media reports that about 20 people sustained severe body injuries during the police attack.
According to him, information available to the police indicated that only five people were hurt during the police attack.
Sgt. Ahianyo also debunked reports that some of the demonstrators were shot dead by the rampaging policemen.
Setting the records straight on Fox FM, he stated that no deaths were recorded during the incident, and therefore urged the media to give accurate reports.
